Intensive Outreach Campaigns

Many times throughout the year, groups of CALM Activists focus in on a city covering all the great places to outreach. In the period of a week there are tens of thousands of outreach hits leading to hundreds to thousands of new vegetarians and a handful of new activists and CALMrads. If you would be interested in joining in on or initiating an intensive outreach campaigns send us an email.

On Outreaching Effectively

Effective outreach should:
  • follow the CALMaction Guidelines.
  • be targeted at a specific audience.
  • be tailored (but not compromised) for the audience.
  • be carried out with passion, conviction, and strength.

What to Look for in a Good Audience (to outreach to)

Quality -  How actively or passively in favour of the animal liberation message are the people? Good audiences are often young, female, progressive, and discontent with the state of the world/society.

Quantity - Is there a large number of people concentrated in a certain location in a certain time period? Relying on quantity without quality, novelty, and intensity will lead to very poor and often counter-productive results.

Novelty -  Is the method of outreach/message new and exciting to the audience? Has the message/method been exhausted (i.e. if there are 1000 posters up for random things and you add one about animal liberation the outreach lacks novelty)

Intensity -
Does the outreach successfully reach a high percentage of an isolated population? Is the audience your targeting very connected to each other? Do the people get several outreach hits each(get a leaflet, see a poster, and watch a video)? To a certain point the more intense outreach is the significantly more effective it is.(i.e. 1 leaflet to every student in a school of 1000 is extremely more effective than 10,000 leaflets to a sea of 50,000 people in downtown toronto)

Answer the questions how you will - the important thing is that you are asking: is the audience good quality? large quantity? is the message/tactic new to them? is the outreach intense(high percentage of an isolated population covered)?

Intensive Outreach is Revolutionary

Along with direct action campaigns, activist support, and effective organizing, intensive outreach has the potential to make huge leaps toward total animal liberation. It is easy to see how widespread intensive outreach could lead to millions of new vegans and thousands of CALMrad* activists. The more CALMrads and vegans there are the easier outreach will become and the stronger direct action campaigns will be. To think most revolutionary groups and animal rights organizations were sparked by 2-3 people, just imagine what thousands of these types of individuals will accomplish in the way of outreach and direct action.
